In line with the general Export Processing Zone plan along the main Harare - Mutare highway and railway line, the inland port would be built in the 1,600 hectare Sunway City integrated park.
According to Sunway City, the plan is for the hub to handle container traffic en route to and from Beira in Mozambique, as well as the other major ports of Maputo, Durban and Richards Bay.
The facility will also be used for the distribution of container and cargo traffic to the sub-region via road, rail and air.
The distribution of cargo by air for high-value low bulk products will provide the link between the Sunway City Inland Port and the air cargo hub being developed at the Harare International Airport by Zimbabwe's Civil Aviation Authority.
The Sunway City hub would also offer a one-stop cargo centre, equipment and space for cargo consolidation, rental space for long-term storage, repackaging, wagon loading and offloading tracks, efficient clearance and documentation, customs brokerage and clearance.
Since Beira is Harare's closes port (560 km away), the facility could also re-direct cargo flows via the Maputo and Durban corridors to the Beira Corridor. Maputo is 1,500 km and Durban 1,700 km from Harare.
