SmartTurn releases new WMS report

Jul 31, 2008

SmartTurn has published its recently commissioned report on Warehouse Management Software: Five key capabilities for every distribution centre.

Independently produced by the Aberdeen Group, this 22-page report identifies the five key characteristics that are common for Best-In-Class warehouse performance for logistics companies and shippers.

Companies with the best warehouse performance were found to have the following:

  • Decreased warehouse costs year-on-year relative to revenue
  • 99%+ pick accuracy rates
  • 99%+ shipping accuracy rates
  • 99%+ perfect order rates

The five characteristics that enabled these top performers to achieve this were defined as:

  • Bin-level location management
  • Paperless receiving
  • Real-time put-away
  • Order picking with mobile devices
  • Cycle counting.

The report goes on to identify the necessary steps that 3PLs and shippers need to adopt in order to achieve Best-in-Class warehouse performance.  These range from conducting a thorough internal review and evaluating the leading WMS vendors, to introducing the latest cutting edge high performance warehouse strategies such as advanced pick methodologies, slotting, labour management and speech-based warehousing.

Featuring numerous tables and graphs, this report will help 3PLs and shippers to understand how WMS and implementation of the latest warehouse management techniques can help drive down warehouse costs and increase order efficiency for customers.
