The Port of Seattle's At-Berth Clean (ABC) Fuels program is providing incentives for ships at berth to burn low-sulphur diesel.
The program encourages carriers to burn low-sulphur fuels (0.5% or less) in their auxiliary engines whilst at berth in the Port of Seattle, by offering an incentive of $2,250 for each call during which ships comply with the fuel requirements.
ABC Fuels is a partnership that includes some of the Port's ocean carriers and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
Low-sulphur fuel reduces sulphur dioxide emissions by 80% and diesel particulate matter by 60%. Since the program began in 2009, it has eliminated more than 96 metric tons of sulphur dioxide emissions.
More than sixty vessels from nine carriers participate in the program: Hapag Lloyd, APL, COSCO, Evergreen Line, Hamburg Süd, Maersk Line, Matson Navigation, Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruise Line.
