Hamburg Süd, has shifted most of its vessel calls from Lattakia to the Port of Tartous in Syria.
According to Romeo Salvador, general manager of the Tartous International Container Terminal (TICT), Hamburg Süd decided to transfer most of its liner services to Tartous due to cargo congestion in Lattakia.
The switch means that five Hamburg Süd container vessels call at Tartous every month, instead of one.
Hamburg Süd's weekly North Europe - Mediterranean direct service now calls at the ports of Felixstowe, Hamburg, Antwerp, Valencia, Alexandria, Beirut, Tartous, Mersin, Izmir and Salerno.
The shipping line's fortnightly Inner Mediterranean service calls at Salerno, Vado Ligure, Leghoen, Mersin, Tartous, Beirut and Alexandria.
TICT has been improving its container handling services by upgrading equipment and facilities, and recently installed two new quay cranes - the first of their kind in Tartous - which are expected to be operational by mid-November.
