DB Schenker Rail Bulgaria begins independent operations

DB Schenker Rail Bulgaria, founded at the start of this year, has officially opened, giving DB Schenker Rail its own national company in the growing Southeast Europe region.

The company also received a traction licence for the Bulgarian rail network. The licence is an important milestone for establishing DB Schenker Rail Bulgaria as an independent railroad company in the Bulgarian transportation market.

The traction licence enables DB Schenker Rail Bulgaria to operate rail transport in Bulgaria independently in addition to the industrial shunting services it has offered to date.

The first transport operations are scheduled to begin in June for European copper producer, Aurubis.

"Integrating DB Schenker Bulgaria into the DB Schenker Rail network will allow the different national companies to benefit from synergies, for example in asset management," said Hans-Georg Werner, member of DB Schenker Rail's management board, responsible for Region East.

He added that the company has already been able to use locomotives from Denmark and Germany to upgrade the vehicle pool, which provides the opportunity to expand the locomotive and car pools in Bulgaria.

Founded in 2002 as a subsidiary of Logistic Services Danubius, DB Schenker Rail Bulgaria has its own electric and diesel shunting and main-line locomotives, and multiple shunting sites throughout Bulgaria.
